Joseph was the son of Jacob and Rachel, his many older brothers were actually half-brothers being the sons of Leah, Jacob's other wife, or of maids. Joseph was hated by his brothers and at the first good opportunity they did not hesitate to get rid of him, he was sold to merchants who took him to Egypt. The subject of the painting is taken from Genesis. Potiphar, head of the Pharaoh's guards, bought Joseph from the merchants and took him into service in her house. The master's wife fell in love with him, proposing herself daily to the servant. Joseph always refused her insistence, but one day while they were alone the woman grabbed him and begged him to make love to her. The slave's escape was so hasty that he left his cloak in the hands of the adulteress. When Potiphar returned home, she wanted to take revenge for the humiliation she had suffered by accusing Joseph of having tried to seduce her and used his dress as evidence and Joseph was thrown into prison.
